Fifth Place for Coghlan and the YZF-R1M in Portugal After Photo Finish

Superstock 1000 FIM Cup rider Kev Coghlan (MRS Yamaha) was initially credited with fourth place at the intense 4.592km Portimao circuit at the end of the 14-lap race, but he was later declared fifth after a photo finish decision went in favour of Ondrej Jezek.

Riding with a fractured metacarpal bone behind his right little finger Coghlan rode on the back of the group that contested second place behind race winner Roberto Tamburini. The injury Coghlan carried into this race was made worse while saving a potential highside with a few laps to go, meaning the final few laps were a particular challenge for the gritty British rider.

Finishing only 4.721 seconds from the winner, and a fraction of a second from the runner-up spot, was a strong performance from the new Yamaha YZF-R1M and a satisfying improvement for all in the MRS team.

A heroic performance from returning MRS Yamaha team regular Florian Marino saw the Frenchman ride with surgical plates in his right forearm and perform well above expectations.

He finished a painful 14 laps in 11th place, having been up as high as fourth in the early part of the contest after putting in a second row qualifying performance on Saturday.

Coghlan, who had been on the third row of the grid, is now fifth in the championship fight, five points behind the rider in overall third place. Marino is still inside the top ten, thanks to his ability to tough it out for the full race distance in Portugal.

Five Yamaha riders packed the finishing positions from eighth to 12th place today, with Jeremy Guarnoni (Team Trasimeno Yamaha) eighth, his team-mate Luca Marconi ninth, Sylvain Barrier (G.M. Racing Yamaha Team) tenth, Marino 11th and Christoffer Bergman (MG Competition Yamaha) 12th. In the current rankings, Guarnoni is sixth overall, 16 points behind Coghlan.

Round six of the eight round series will take place at Misano, on Sunday 21st June.

Kev Coghlan
5th / +4.721/ 14 laps

"We have been trying quite a lot of things over the weekend. We made another change for warm-up and in the race it seemed to pay off. I had a decent start but I lost a bit of time in the first couple of laps trying to get past Florian, as he was braking really strongly until he ran off. I was sitting fourth with three or four laps to go, had a big moment out of turn 14, and I had a bad shooting pain right up my arm. After that I really struggled under hard braking to be able to make a move forward but I managed to get within touching distance on the last lap. I was happy with the final result today because in the last few races the first three have just disappeared in the first few laps. We couldn't do anything with them but here we were able to catch back up and get right back into the fight. It gives us a bit more confidence."

"At times I was riding with just one arm and at this track I didn't have not enough power to hold the bike on the brakes. I made a big mistake on lap three and lost four positions so I was just fighting with myself. I knew that coming to this physical track, in this condition, I could not expect a lot. I think I have done more than we expected so we should take some credit for this weekend. Let's see for the next round."

Adrian Morillas – MRS Yamaha Team Manager

"On the photo finish Jezek was 30cm in front of Kev but the lap time was the same for each, because the transponder is not mounted in the same place on each bike. It means Kev was fifth not fourth but we are happy because at the beginning we did not think we could have a good race like this. He has a broken hand and a lot of pain. He caught a slide and after he controlled it he had a lot of pain in his forearm from then on. Before the race, honestly we did not think that Florian would finish, but he not only finished, he fought with Barrier and Guarnoni, with an arm that would normally take three months to heal. We are happy with our efforts here. I think we have made a big step because we could fight with the leaders. For Misano, if the riders are OK, we can push for even more."
