MRS Yamaha rider Kev Coghlan took a second row starting position at the Misano round of the FIM Superstock 1000 FIM Cup after qualifying in fifth place, just losing a chance to make an even better lap time after a red flag was shown as he was about to make an improvement on his eventual 1'37.077 best.
Kev was the only MRS Yamaha rider in qualifying after team regular Florian Marino fell in practice and one of the screws holding surgical steel plates onto his left forearm started to come loose.
It was decided that Florian, who finished the combined free practice sessions in ninth place from 37 riders, should not risk further injury by competing again this weekend, especially as he also suffered a possible new injury to his right wrist after his crash.
For Coghlan the red flag that caused the lone Stock 1000 qualifying session to be run in two parts could not have come at a worse time, but he still starts from a strong position, in the middle of the second row, on his YZF-R1M.
The recently resurfaced Misano circuit possibly worked in favour of Coghlan's machine in qualifying, held in warm and dry conditions, with high grip levels available from the new track to allow Coghlan to compete in the top few qualifying places.
The 14-lap Misano Superstock 1000 race is scheduled to start at 14.15, on Sunday 21st June.
