Marino and Coghlan had taken turns to lead the single qualifying period but for Florian a small crash near the end prevented him from going for his best possible time before the finish of the 30-minute session. He emerged unscathed and in taking the first spot on the second row he starts from a strong position in readiness for Sunday's 14-lap race.
Coghlan, a podium finisher in the first round at Motorland Aragon last weekend, had to make set-up changes in qualifying at Assen just after he had used a fresh tyre. Although finding improvements in his overall feel immediately afterwards the optimum grip of the tyre had gone and he could not set a significantly faster time. He joins Marino on the second row for Sunday's race, which is scheduled to start at 14.15, just after the second FIM Superbike World championship contest has been completed. |
| | | | "I think tonight we will look for a little more grip when leaned over on the side of the tyre and I think that tomorrow we should have a good chance to fight with the guys at the front. Hopefully I can be part of the battle for the race win and that is our goal now. I had a small fall near the end of qualifying but I am not hurt. I came back in to the pits and when I went back out I felt that the new tyre did not have the grip that it was supposed to, so I did just one lap. I pulled in and we made a coupe of modifications on the rear shock to get a bit more grip into it but just after that I made a couple of mistakes on my fast run on the new tyre. I then managed to put a fairly clean lap together and went just a little faster to bump me up to sixth. Assen is not a place I have ever found easy so to have qualified sixth today, and get on the second row, is a good start." | | |

Kev started the first practice in 11th or 12th place but now we have worked on the bike and he is sixth. That is good because in qualifying we started with too much preload on the rear so he slid too much on the new tyre. He stopped, we removed some preload and after he restarted it was much better - but by then the tyre was old. For the race we will be good with Florian fourth and Kev sixth off the grid." | Marino and Coghlan were the top two Yamaha qualifiers on the new YZF-R1M with local wild card rider Danny De Boer (SWPM Yamaha) qualifying 11th, one place up on news series regular Sylvain Barrier (G.M.
