Front Row Start For New Yamaha YZF-R1M And Coghlan First Time Out

MRS Yamaha Team rider Kev Coghlan gave the all-new Yamaha YZF-R1M a great competitive debut after its first qualifying session in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, earning a front row start at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Spain. His third place performance saw him only 0.056 seconds from pole after an intense 30-minute qualifying session in readiness for Sunday's 13-lap race.

After pushing too hard to find a strong time in qualifying Florian Marino took his MRS Yamaha to ninth place on the grid, occupying the last available spot on the third row of the grid. Marino had exhibited strong pace at times before qualifying began and hopes to find that kind of form again early in the race to make up places and challenge at the front of a strong 35-rider field for the opening Superstock round of the season.

The debut weekend in this class of racing for the all-new R1M saw five inside the top 14 places – more than one third of the top grid sports - including one ridden by new G.M. Racing Yamaha signing Sylvain Barrier. He had a heavy crash earlier in the day but battled back to take seventh place on the grid.

"At the start we went out and were quickest on used tyres. All weekend we have been going quick on used tyres so that should be a positive for the race. For a time we were struggling a bit on a new tyre, just to put in a fast time. A few changes from this morning to now let me push that bit more when I had new rubber fitted and therefore more grip. Big thanks to the team and all the guys at Yamaha who are putting in a lot to this project. It is a brand new bike, first time out, and we are on the front row and only 0.056 seconds off of pole. That cannot be bad."

"I tried some different things with the set-up in qualifying but it did not work so well. I tried to push harder but it was a bit too much, so it was quite disappointing. I think tomorrow I will start from ninth place and hopefully we can sort out some stuff to try to improve my feeling. Anyway, I will be there and try my best."

Adrian Morillas - MRS Yamaha Team

"For the moment we have a lot of work to do on the bike because it is new and we know we have a lot of things still to try. For this I am very happy that Kev is could stay third and not far from pole. I think tomorrow we can do very good because Kev has been very consistent on used tyre. Already we know the new R1M is a good bike, its engine is very smooth and for the tyres that should be good. Florian wanted to attack too much in qualifying, trying too hard. This morning he was fast, doing a 1'53.9 easily but in qualifying he wanted to go too fast. If he rides smoothly tomorrow he will be able to do a good race."
